Headlights & Lenses

To my surprised, style and date correct headlights may be the greatest T5 part sourcing challenge so far. It seems the T5 are the weird middle child during the short transition from 356A to 356B T6.

An ideal scenario would allow you to source a pair with the correct date marking on the outside of the main lite assembly. These can be deciphered courtesy Paul Hatfield. Unfortunately, T5 range lights are tough to find period. And even then, the frequency of broken glass lenses mean that those were often replaced with something current at the time, possibly VW.

Believe it or not, the details are complex enough to warrant separating headlight components from the lenses. The following is specific to USA delivered T5.

Headlight Assembly

  • Hella
  • Sealed beam
  • Symmetrical
  • 6v
  • Adjusting screws at 5 & 7 o’clock
  • Slotted head adjusting screws (instead of Philips)
  • No parking light bulb in front of main lamp housing (likely just a depopulated A headlight assembly)
  • Silver painted cardboard or metal over resulting parking light hole

Headlight Lenses

  • Fluting / lines only in an arc at the top
  • Hella logo at the bottom
  • Raised lettering on outside of lens
  • Lettering follows the curved bottom of the lens
  • Marked: “3-60370” or “4-60370”
  • “Made in Germany”?

Headlight Bulbs

  • Westinghouse or GE?

As usual, I am not claiming to be an expert. Most of these conclusions are arrived at after scouring the message boards and reading the research of others. The difference here is I’m trying to narrow down the T5 specifics. Most notably sources include:
