Engine Tin Paint Match

Well. Since I can’t seem to put a connecting rod on a crankshaft to save my life, I turned my attention to paint matching. As mentioned in my previous color post, I got a bunch of samples from Prismatic Powders. They have a Porsche Silver and Porsche Grey, but neither matched what I’m working on very well.

I used original parts as my target. For silver I used the original fan shroud from the car and found a spot that was mostly protected by the fan. For black, I had a pair of new old stock heat exchanger flapper boxes. They are OEM as the factory sticker was still on them. I then cleaned a surface with 3M Prep Sol.

I eye-balled the various samples and narrowed the options down to three best candidates and looked at the samples against original finish in four lighting conditions:

  1. Florescent indoor
  2. LED indoor
  3. Sunlight outdoor
  4. Shaded outdoor

The different lighting conditions may seem like overkill, but some samples looked great in one scenario, but way off under different lights. Ultimately, I think I came out with clear winners with matches for Super 90 fan shroud silver and basic engine tin black in all lighting. You can see for yourself below. They are Prismatic Powders Card Black PSS-1523 and White Silver Plus PMB-4823.
