I’m Not a Fan (Housing)

As we discovered previously, most Porsche components have numbers on them. Sometimes they are part numbers. Sometimes they are casting numbers. Sometimes they have both. Sometimes neither. What gets particularly confusing is that a given casting number could be worked into different part numbers with different applications. When shopping for a 914-6 fan housing it is good to keep this in mind.

It appears that for 911 made between 1965 and 1989, there were no less than 8 different fan housings. Varying in material (aluminum, magnesium), diameter (250, 245, 226), and depth (86, 95, 106). Thank you for a magnificent summary Tom Butler.

As it applies to the 914-6, you’re looking for part number 901.106.011.00 which is for a 11-blade fan with 245 mm diameter. You won’t find that part number on the fan housing. You will find casting number 901.106.101.0R (1967-68 911) or 901.106.101.5R (1969-74 911). That later casting could have been made into a 86 mm deep housing for a 55 amp alternator or a 95 mm deep version for a 70 amp alternator (part number: 911.100.008.00).

So if you’re about a 914-6, you should be looking for casting number 901.106.101.5R with a depth of 86 mm (lip to alternator mount face). As the 914-6 engine has 770W 14v generator which equates to 55 amps. It is made of die cast magnesium. Shared with 1969-74 911 (with coil studs).
