A small step forward over the weekend. I believe I successfully rebuilt our fuel-pump. Based on our engine number, it appears that the early style which was on the car is correct. Whew.
Thanks to an extremely helpful article by Bruce Smith on cleaning Zinc alloy components (i.e. carburetors and fuel pumps), we had something clean enough to start rebuilding. Simple Green, Pine Sol, and a lot of brushing brought it back to better than presentable.
The original guts had seen some neglect, and thankfully a rebuild kit from Stoddard covered most of the bases.
Two more articles from Bruce Smith on Fuel Pumps and Rebuilding were valuable resources. Including mention of the Porsche and VW designed a tool (VW 328b) used to pre-load the A/B fuel pump during assembly. Found some home-made tool designs that I could leverage to build our own out of scrap aluminum and some bolts from the hardware store. It must have worked, as I got the squawk sound when actuating the rocker arm.
There may a bit more surfacing work to do to make sure the ports that face the banjo fittings do not leak.
As with a lot on this car, this small project was a slippery slope. Causing me to find that not all our fuel lines were original. With bead blasting uncovering a hard line that made of copper.
