Camera

Here's a little cheatsheet that I made for myself when I first started shooting race cars. Things happen quickly at the track, so I printed this out and stuck it in the back of my badge holder for a quick reference.

Car Photos

  • Stop moving car (while showing some blur in wheels to suggest motion) Shutter priority, 1/500-1/800
  • Panning with car (sharp car, moving background and wheels): Shutter priority, 1/10-1/30
  • Shooting through fence: Aperture priority, widest aperture (lowest f-stop #)
  • Blur car going by, sharp stationary background: Shutter priority, 1/60-1/100
  • Head/tail-on shots, sharp car with out of focus background: Aperture priority, widest aperture (lowest f-stop #)

General Info

Depth of field: Smaller aperture (highest f-stop #) means less light, but increased depth of field.
